Our new foundation: PASSION

A New Foundation: Passion

Gratitude, Accountability, Toughness and Hard Work. These were the values - the foundations - upon which our Devon Prep basketball program has been built. They are values that transcend sports and can be used to not only help our athletes on the court but also off the court when the ball has stopped bouncing. These foundations have been a huge part of our culture and they always will be. Obviously these values are not the only things that our program is based off of, but they are things that we found to be topics that we wanted to focus on because each one has a special importance to us. That importance will never waiver. That being said, like with anything, things evolve over time. While these four foundations are always important, one of them has become so ingrained in us and our program that we no longer have the need to focus on it daily like we did a decade ago. We will always work hard. Hard work is no longer something that we have to remind ourselves of and strive towards. It is fundamental now in the Devon Prep Basketball Program.

After each season, there is always a time to stop and reflect on what we do well and what we need to work on. The end of this season was no different. While we ended the year as PIAA State Champions, there are still things that we need to improve on. One of those things that we are lacking at times in our program is our passion. Passion not only as individuals but as a program.

One of the only things that we can truly control in life is how we respond when things happen to us. We cannot really control what other people do but we can control how we respond. We can control our attitude. It is always easy to make excuses and to be upset when bad things happen to us, but it is not easy to respond to those negative events with a positive attitude…with a passion.

The ‘textbook’ definition of passion is “an intense, driving, or overmastering feeling or conviction. It refers to a strong enthusiasm or devotion to a particular activity, interest, or cause. Passion often involves a deep emotional investment and a sense of excitement or fulfillment when engaging in the activity or pursuing the interest.”

Having passion in what we do can be a powerful motivator that fuels creativity, perseverance and satisfaction in both personal and professional pursuits. Watch children play.  They play for the pure joy of the game.  You can see their passion.  Even though their talent may be lacking, their enthusiasm is on full display.  As time goes on, people often lose that passion or are hesitant to show it.  This happens in all aspects of life, not just in sports. The crazy thing is, this is one of the things that we can control if we are aware of it. We can always respond to events that occur with positivity…with passion. We do not have to lose that enthusiasm for what we are doing.

Moving forward, a new foundation for our program will be passion. We will strive to display this passion and positivity in everything we do regardless of what happens to us.

We will always work hard. It has become who we are. And we will continue to grow.  And as we do our goals will change and evolve with us.

Gratitude, Accountability, Toughness and…..Passion
